Jesus Did Not Come To Die

Donna Carlisle Boudreau

I. God's will for the Kingdom of Heaven on earth was to prepare the chosen nation of Israel for 2000 years to follow and receive Jesus, then to take Christ to the entire world for salvation.

A. God chose the nation of Israel to believe and receive Christ.

Psalms 87:1-3 "On the holy mount stands the city he founded; the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God."

Psalms 105:6 "O offspring of Abraham, his servant, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!"

Psalms 131:13 "For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his habitation."

Psalms 135:4 "For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his own possession."

Isaiah 41:8-10 "But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, 'You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off'; fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am you God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will help you, I I will uphold with my victorious right hand."

Romans 9:4-5 "They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen."

B. Israel longed for this salvation in receiving Christ.

Psalms 24:9-10 "Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of Hosts, he is the King of Glory!"

Psalms 25:22 "Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles."

Psalms 79:9 "Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name's sake!"

Psalms 80:3 "Restore us, O God; let thy face shine, that we maybe saved!"

Psalms 85:7,9 "Show us thy steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation. Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land."

Psalms 95:1 "0 come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation."

Psalms 149:2 "Let Israel be glad in his Maker, let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King!"

Psalms 115:9 "o Israel, trust in the Lord! He is their help and their shield."

Isaiah 12:6 "Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel."

Isaiah 25:9 "It will be said on that day, 'Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation."

Psalms 33:20-21 "Yea, our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let thy steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in thee."

Acts 1:6 "So when they had come together, they asked him, 'Lord, will you at this time restore the Kingdom to Israel?"

C. God promised salvation through Christ to Israel.

Psalms 34:22 "The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned."

Psalms 81:10 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it."

Psalms 94:14 "For the Lord will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage;"

Psalms 102:16 "For the Lord will build up Zion, he will appear in his glory."

Psalms 115:12 "The Lord has been mindful of us; he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel..."

Psalms 130:8 "And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities."

Psalms 131:17 "There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed."

Isaiah 24:23 "Then the moon will be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for the Lord of hosts will reign of Mount Zion and in Jerusalem and before his elders he will manifest his glory."

Isaiah 30:18-21 "Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. Yea, O people in Zion who dwell at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left."

Isaiah 41:14 "Fear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel! I will help you says the Lord; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel."

Joel 2:27 "You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame."

Zechariah 9:16 "On that day the Lord their God will save them for they are the flock of his people; for like the jewels of a crown they shall shine on his land."

Matthew 2:5-6 "They told him, 'In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 'And you, o Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel."

Luke 2:30 "for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel."

John 1:31 "I myself (John the Baptist) did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."

Romans 15:8 "For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs."

D. The nation of Israel was to give witness and salvation to the world through Christ.

Isaiah 27:6 "In days to come Jacob shall take root, Israel shall blossom and put forth shoots, and fill the whole world with fruit."

Isaiah 42:1 "Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations."

Isaiah 43:10 "You are my witnesses' says the Lord, 'and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He."

Isaiah 49:5-6 "And now the Lord says, who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength--he says: 'It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

Zechariah 8:20-23 "Thus says the Lord of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities; the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, 'Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts; I am going.' Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, 'Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."

Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek."

Romans 3:2 "...to begin with, the Jews are entrusted with the oracles of God."

John 4:22 "(Jesus to a Samaritan woman) You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews."

E. Jesus focused on bringing the Israel nation to believe in him as the Christ.

Matthew 10:5 "These twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, 'Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel."

John 18:20 "Jesus answered him, ' I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all Jews come together; . ."

Matthew 15:23-27 "But he (Jesus) did not answer her (a woman possessed) a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.' But she came and knelt before him, saying, 'Lord, help me.' And he answered, 'It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." (Also recorded in Mark 7:25-27)

Romans 11:29 "For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable."

Jesus focused on fulfilling the irrevocable call of Israel to God.

II. The will of God for salvation of the Jews required belief, faith and obedience to Jesus.

A. God wanted the Israelites to believe, follow, and obey Jesus.

John 6:28 "Then they said to him, 'What must we do, to be doing the works of God?' Jesus answered the, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

John 5:46 "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me."

John 5:24 "Truly, truly I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life."

Matthew 10:32 "So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven."

Matthew 10:40 "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me." (Also recorded in John 13:20)

John 12:44-46 "And Jesus cried out and said, 'He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And he who sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

John 8:31-32 "Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, 'If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 8:51 "Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death."

John 11:25 "Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."

John 11:42 "I knew that thou hearest me always, but I have said this on account of the people standing by, that they may believe that thou didst send me." (Jesus to Heavenly Father.)

John 12:26 "If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him."

John 14:7 "If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him."

John 14:11-12 "Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father."

John 14:21 "He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

John 6:39 "and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day.'

John 6:47 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life."

John 16:27 "For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father."

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

B. Jesus showed by his actions that the will of God was for the Israelites to believe in him.

1. The people needed miracles and works to believe.

John 4:48 "Jesus therefore said to him, 'Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe."

John 6:30 "So they said to him, 'Then what sign do you do, that we may see, and believe you? What work do you perform?"

John 7:31 "Yet many of the people believed in him; they said, 'When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?"

2. Jesus did works and miracles so the Israelites could believe in him.

John 20:30-31 "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name."

John 10:38 "but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."

Acts 2:22 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.."

John 14:11 "Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves."

C. Non-believers of Jesus deny the will of God.

John 16:9 "concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;"

Luke 10:16 "He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me."

John 8:24 "I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he."

Luke 12:9 "but he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God."

Luke 19:27 "But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them; bring them here and slay them before me."

Luke 3:9 "Even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

Luke 13:9 "And if it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down."

Matthew 7:26 "And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand."

Matthew 12:30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters." (Also recorded in Mark 9:40, Luke 9:50, and Luke 11:23)

John 5:23 "that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him."

III. The Israelites failed to do the will of God by not believing in Jesus.

John 3:11 "Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen but you do not receive our testimony."

John 5:38-40 "and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent. You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me; yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life."

John 6:36 "But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe."

Luke 12:56 "You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?"

Matthew 8:10 "When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."

Luke 10:24 "For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it."

John 8:19 "They said to him therefore, 'Where is your Father?' Jesus answered, 'You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also."

Matthew 8:11-12 "I tell you, many will come from the bast and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth."

Matthew 22:8 "Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy." (Also recorded in Luke 14:24)

Matthew 23:13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in."

Luke 20:9-16 Parable of the wicked tenant "He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." (Also recorded in Mark 12:1-12)

John 8:45 "But, because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God."

John 5:42-43 "But I know that you have not the love of God within you. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me;..."

Romans 9:31 "But that Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law."

Romans 10:1-4 "Brethern, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them (Israelites) is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but iL is not enlightened. For being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness."

John 10:24-26 "So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, 'How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.' Jesus answered them, 'I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep."

John 12:37 "Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him,"

Acts 13:46 "And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, 'It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles."

IV. Israel is chastised and cursed for not following the will of God by believing in Jesus.

Luke 19:42-44 "And when he drew near and saw the city he wept over it, saying, 'Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies will cast up a bank about you and surround you, and hem you in on every side, and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation."

Matthew 23:27 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate."

John 8:39 "They answered him, 'Abraham is our father.' Jesus said to them, 'If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did."

Luke 21:23 "Alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! For great distress shall be upon the earth and wrath upon this people!"

Luke 23:28-30 "But Jesus turning to them said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for you children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!' Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us'."

Matthew 21:31-32 "Jesus said to them, 'Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him."

Matthew 21:43-45 "Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it.' When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them."

Matthew 23:31-33 "Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of you fathers. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?"

John 7:19 "Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?"

John 8:37 "I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you."

Romans 11:17-24 Parable of the olive tree

V. It was Satan's will, not God's will, to have Jesus crucified.

A. Satan worked through Judas.

1. Satan worked in Judas.

John 13:2 "And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him.."

John 13:26-27 "So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, 'What you are going to do, do quickly."

John 6:70-71 "Jesus answered them, 'Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?' He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was to betray him."

John 13:11 "For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, 'You are not all clean."

2. Jesus condemned Judas for his betrayal. He would not do so if it were God's will for the crucifixion.

Matthew 26:24 "Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." (Also recorded in Mark 14:21 and Luke 22:21)

B. Satan worked through the nation of Israel to crucify Jesus.

1. The nation of Israel was responsible for the crucifixion.

John 18:35 "Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me..."

John 19:7 "The Jews answered him, 'We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."

John 19:15 "They (the Jews) cried out, 'Away with him, away with him, crucify him."

Acts 3:12-15 "(Peter) Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead."

Acts 4:10 "be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified.."

2. Jesus said Satan worked through the Israelites.

John 8:40-41 "but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did. You do what your father did."

John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning.."

John 14:30 "I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming.."

C. Only those who do God's will enter heaven. Judas and the Israelites were condemned by Jesus, therefore their crucifixion of Jesus could not have been God's will.

Matthew 7:21 "Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

VI. The tragedy of the crucifixion soon became evident.

A. Jesus had much grief in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Matthew 26:38 "Then he said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, even unto death; remain here, and watch over me." (also in Mark 14:34)

Mark 14:33 "And he took with him Peter and James and John and began to be greatly distressed and troubled."

John 12:27 "Now is my soul troubled..."

Luke 22:44 "And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground."

B. Jesus prayed for this hour to pass from him.

Matthew 26:39,42,44 "And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, 'My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt...Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, 'My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done.'...So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words." (Also recorded in Mark 14:35-36, and Luke 22:42)

-- Many say Jesus prayed from his human weakness and fear. What an insult to our Lord! Jesus said himself in Luke 12:4,"I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do." Many saints, war heroes and patriots have willingly and gladly given their lives for their country. Surely Jesus was no less than they were! Jesus knew that the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth would have to be postponed until the second coming of Christ if he died, and thus prayed in this manner.

C. Jesus forgave the Israelites, however, for their ignorance of God's will.

Luke 23:34 "And Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."

D. Darkness surrounded the tragedy of the crucifixion.

Luke 22:53 "When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."

Matthew 27:50,1,45" And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split;.. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.." (Also recorded in Mark 15:33,38 and Luke 23:44-45

VII. Because of the rejection of the Israelites leading to the crucifixion, Jesus' original mission given by God was not completed.

A. Jesus' original mission was

1. to forgive sins.

Matthew 1:21 "she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

Psalms 79:9 "Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name's sake!"

Psalms 130:8 ".And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities."

2. to establish the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

Matthew 6:10 "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

Matthew 4:17 "From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, 'Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." (Also recorded in Mark 1:15)

3. to establish perfect, sinless men like Christ.

Matthew 5:48 "You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

John 1:29 "The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."

I Cor. 3:16 "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's spirit dwells in you?"

I Cor. 6:15 "Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?"

4. To reveal the entire truth of God.

John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way and the truth and the life..'

Ephesians 4:21 "assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus."

John 8:40 "but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you truth which I heard from God.."

B. The crucifixion of Jesus did not promote his original mission.

1. Jesus forgave sins with faith, not with his death on the cross.

Matthew 9:2 "..Take heart my son; your sins are forgiven.."

Matthew 9:6 "But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins.." (Also recorded in Mark 2:5,10 and Luke 5:20,24)

Luke 7:48 "And he said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven."

Luke 7:50 "And he said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

2. The earth is still under the dominion of Satan, not God.

Revelation 2:13 "I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is;.."

I Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour."

3. Men are still sinful and waiting for salvation of God's temple, our body.

a. Men are still sinful.

I John 1:8 "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

I John 1:10 "If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."

Philippians 3:12-13 "Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead I press on.."

Romans 3:23 "since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,'

Romans 7:14 "We know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin."

Revelation 3:1-2 "I know your works; you have the name of being alive, and you are dead. Awake, and strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your works perfect in the sight of my God."

b. Men are still waiting for salvation of God's body.

Romans 8:23-24 "and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies."

Romans 7:22-25 "For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?"

4. The entire truth has not been revealed.

John 16:12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now."

John 16:25 "I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father."

John 3:12 "If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?"

C. Therefore, we need a second coming of Christ to complete Christ's original mission.

Revelation 22:20 "Come, Lord Jesus!"

Matthew 10:23 "...for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of Man comes."

Matthew 16:28 "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

1. To begin God's dominion and end Satan's dominion on earth.

Revelation 11:15 "Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying, 'The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

Revelation 12:9 "And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world--he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."

Revelation 12:10 "And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, 'Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God."

Revelation 20:2 "And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years."

2. To save the people's spirits and bodies from sin.

Hebrews 9:28 "so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him."

I Peter 1:5 "who by God's power are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."

3. To reveal the entire truth of God.

John 16:13 "When he who is the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."

Acts 2:17 "And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and you sons and you daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams."

Revelation 10:11 "And I was told, 'You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and tongues and kings."

VIII. The apostles severely chastised and cursed Israel for the crucifixion of Jesus.

I Cor. 2:8 "None of the rulers of this age understood this ("secret and hidden wisdom of God"), for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.

Acts 3:17 "And now, brethern, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers." (About the crucifixion of Jesus)

Acts 7:52-53 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As you fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it."

IX. Why do people today believe it was God's will for the crucifixion?

A. Dual Prophecies in the Old Testament lead people to that conclusion.

1. A suffering and rejected Messiah was predicted.

Isaiah 53 (3)"He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not."

Psalms 89:38 "But now thou hast cast off and rejected, thou art full of wrath against thy anointed."

Zechariah 11:4 "Thus said the Lord my God: 'Become shepherd of the flock doomed to slaughter."

Zechariah 11:7 "So I became the shepherd of the flock doomed to be slain for those who trafficked in the sheep .....

Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication so that, when they lock on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born."

Psalms 2:1-2 "Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and His anointed..."

Psalms 22:6-8 "But I am a worm and no man; scorned by men, and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me, they make mouths at me they wag their heads; 'He committed his cause to the Lord; let him deliver him, let him rescue him, for he delights in him!"

Psalms 22:16-18 "Yea, dogs are round about me; a company of evildoers encircle me; they have pierced my hands and feet--I can count all my bones--they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my raiment they cast lots."

Matthew 16:21 "From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying 'God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you.' But he turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men." (Also Jesus spoke of his crucifixion in Matthew 17:23, 20:18, 26:2; Mark 8:30-33,9:31; Luke 9:21-22,18:31,10:33)

2. A triumphal and glorious Lord who reigns over Israel forever was also predicted.

Psalms 72:11 "May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!"

Psalms 2:7-8 "I will tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to me, 'You are my son, today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession."

Isaiah 40:11 "He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are young."

Isaiah 2:4 "He shall judge between the nations; and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hocks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Also Micah 4:1-4)

Isaiah 9:7 "Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forever more. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will do this."

Isaiah 2:17 "And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the pride of men shall be brought low; and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day."

Psalms 89:27,29 "And I will make him the first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth...I will establish his line forever and his throne as the days of the heavens."

Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, 0 daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he,"

Psalms 110:1-7 (2) "The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of you foes!"

Isaiah 60 (2-3) "but the Lord will arise upon you, and nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising..."

Daniel 2:44 "And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall its sovereignty be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever;"

Amos 9:11-15 (14) "I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit."

Micah 5:4 "And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth."

Luke 1:32-33 "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end."

Luke 2:38 "And coming up at that very hour she (Anna) gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem."

Luke 4:18 "(Jesus reading Old Testament scripture about himself..) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."

John 1:49 "Nathaniel answered him, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel."

3. But Jesus fulfilled all Old Testament prophecies.

Matthew 5:17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them."

Romans 10:4 "For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified."

4. How could these seemingly contradictory prophecies exist?

Man has free will. He can either follow God's law or reject God's law. God knows that man has free will, and thus knows both possibilities as well as the outcome of each. Therefore, he predicts both courses and it is man's responsibility to choose. For example, in the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve the commandment, "Don't eat the fruit" (Genesis 2:17). If they obeyed, they lived; if they disobeyed, they died.

Likewise, the nation of Israel has the freedom to choose between obedience and disobedience to Jesus. God knows the possibilities and the outcome of each choice, and so prepares both ways to build the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. If the Israeli nation followed Jesus, then God could build the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. If not, then Jesus must suffer the way of the cross, and God must prepare the way for the second coming to finish his Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Jesus began to preach about his own crucifixion only after the Israelites had made their choice to reject Jesus (in all four Gospels). Ultimately, God's will is the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, but it was up to the Israelites to choose responsibly.

5. God wanted, and therefore warned, the Israelites to believe and follow Jesus.

Psalms 81:13 "O that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!"

Psalms 2:10-12 "Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, with trembling, kiss his feet, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way; for his wrath is quickly kindled."

Psalms 37:32-34 "The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him. The Lord will not abandon him to his power, or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial. Wait for the Lord, and keep to his way, and he will exalt you to possess the land; you will look on the destruction of the wicked."

Psalms 125:2-3 "As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people, from this time forth and forever more. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous put forth their hands to do wrong."

B. The disciples couldn't explain why the Messiah had to die; all they knew was that it happened. Therefore, many people follow their example and believe Jesus came to die simply because it happened.

1. Many of the people couldn't accept a "dead Messiah", and they kept others from believing it as well.

I Cor. 1:23 "But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to the Jews and folly to the Gentiles."

John 12:34 "The crowd answered him, 'We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"

John 12:42 "Nevertheless many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it..."

John 9:22 "His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue."

2. Therefore, the major task of the apostles was to convince the people that Christ could be, and was, crucified. They taught little else.

I Cor. 2:2 "For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." (Paul)

3. The disciples and people today believe it was God's will for the death of Jesus because it happened that way. They ask, "Could anything happen to Jesus that wasn't God's will?"

But to ask such a question clearly denies the existence of Satan and Satan's will working on Jesus to rid the world of God's only hope and salvation. But until now, no one has been able to offer a logical alternative for salvation through Jesus other than the way of the cross. A deep look into the Biblical evidence clearly shows that the crucifixion was one of the greatest tragedies to God, our Father and to mankind.
