South Africa

The first pioneers of this region were Wouter and Susan van der Stok. The couple were witnessed to in the Netherlands and began witnessing activity in South Africa from the summer of 1970. By the time missionaries arrived here in 1975, a foundation was already laid. Missionaries worked hard, especially in Johannesburg and Pretoria. The van der Stok couple worked in Cape Town. In the early days, missionaries received close scrutiny from police. American missionary John Brady had to leave the country because of a visa problem, after serving three weeks in prison.Twelve members set out to do forty days of pioneer witnessing in 1980, and members were dispatched again in 1981 for a second forty-day pioneer period. This kind of effort laid the foundation in over twenty cities.
