Hong Kong

As was the case in other countries, there were many difficulties in the history of missionary activity in Hong Kong. However, members overcame the difficulties and laid the foundation for success. Following is an account of the important aspects of the activities in Hong Kong. During his world tour in 1965, Reverend Moon visited Hong Kong and created a Holy Ground.

In 1974, Ela Chang from Hong Kong joined the church while studying at a university in Taiwan. At the request of Mr. Oyama, he went to Hong Kong as a pioneer to work for the ginseng tea business. Mr. Oyama asked Dennis Orme, then leader of the church in Britain, to send one member who could help business in Hong Kong. Jeremy Jordan was selected and he came to work with Ela Chang.Three missionaries representing Japan, Germany and the United States arrived in Hong Kong in 1975. As the local laws forbade men and women to reside together, two apartments were found. At the beginning of the year, the three missionaries prayed and did many activities. American missionary Helen Chin Alexander taught English and also taught people with handicapped sight. Masaki Hagino registered the Hong Kong branch of the Japanese newspaper, Sekai Nippo. They organized many workshops during these few years, and held a regular Sunday service.

They held a public lecture on May 13, 1979 under the title "The New Future of Christianity," attended by thirty people. Immediately after this, the church was officially registered.

In 1984, activities were strengthened centered on professors and clergymen. A twenty-one day evening workshop was held in 1985. The missionaries also preached on the street. They published Outline of the Principle (Level 4) in Chinese and sent the book to Taiwan. They produced pamphlets introducing the Unification Church movement in both English and Chinese, and sent them to seven hundred organizations. From 1986, based on the video tape Faith and Reality, seminars were begun to introduce the Unification movement to clergymen. CAUSA began its activities in 1987. A text of the essential tenets of CAUSA was published in Chinese. A PWPA seminar under the theme China in the New Era was held in the Philippines.
