Community Garden In Full Bloom
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Although summer isn't usually known as harvest time, we are experiencing bumper crops at UTS, both in terms of vegetables from our community garden and the numbers of people at UTS utilizing this sacred space. Around 150 ladies were here for a 21-day retreat, with over 80 husbands joining them for the final 8 days. Then, a sunny but not too hot August 10th, saw 2,500 people gathered here for spiritual renewal and affirmation, including reaffirmation of holy vows. Over the weekend of August 12th & 13th, UTS welcomed back 150 Christian Brothers attending their 4th bi-annual reunion. And yet another new crop bearing fruit at UTS is the first Doctorate class (see article below). We're looking forward to a new generation of students arriving for our Fall semester, so all in all, we're getting a whole new perspective on "By their fruits ye shall know them."
love and peace, Gillian Corcoran
Strengthening Our Network
Here at UTS we're working to improve the quality of communications with the alumni/ae in the USA and throughout the world. This means getting feedback on their time and studies at Barrytown and the Extension Center, and learning about their experiences after seminary in work and vocation. These insights can add value to current students as they prepare for their future missions, internships and jobs. We have been shifting UTS practice to becoming a better alma mater or caring parent. This means being interested in students before, during and well after their time at UTS.
We are also concerned with improving our outreach to alumni. Altogether there are about 1500 graduates of the seminary. There is good contact information for about 50%, primarily through email addresses. Many alumni/ae change location, jobs, or missions quite frequently and it is difficult to maintain the records. To help UTS Alumni Relations, an alumni liaison system is being developed. Usually state by state in the USA, or with a liaison covering several states when there are not so many alumni. Outside of the USA, it is by country or region. Recently, Jerome and Jeannie Carroll stepped up to the position for the New Jersey alumni. If you are wondering who your liaison may be, you can check the alumni section of the UTS website. If you would like to volunteer for the role please let Gillian know at walk4peace@earthlink.net.
