Welcoming True Parents in Belgium in 2006-02-13

February 24, 2006
Firstly, I would like to introduce our 2 lawyers, Mr. Charles Delnois (here present), Expert on Individual Rights at the European Commission and President of CAP-LC (Coordination of Associations & Private Citizens for the Freedom of Conscience).
And secondly, Miss Ines Wouters, who also works very actively against those who persecute religious minorities. She came recently to the first UPF assembly in Korea. Summary of what has been recently done to welcome True Parents in Belgium:
Firstly, we tried to obtain a Schengen exception from the Belgian government. In the beginning, the response of the Foreign Office and the Minister of Interior was quite encouraging, and there appeared to be not so much opposition. In the weeks that followed we were hoping to receive a "yes" document for True Parents entry from them but…nothing came. However, after a certain time, we heard through our lawyer that the Ministry felt obliged to respect the Shengen Treaty and wanted to pose no opposition to Germany. We continued, without success however, to push further through various channels, including the Korean Embassy and the brother in law of the Interior Minister.
Finally our lawyer called the Minister of Interior who explained that they would like to help us, but that they didn’t want to offend Germany. They agreed and explained that the best way forward was for us to make a court case against the government, so that they would have the appropriate excuse to give us the exception.
In order to make such a court case, we would first need a letter from the Minister of Interior stating that True Parents are refused.
In order to obtain such a letter of refusal from the Belgian government, we proceeded first to send a letter to say that we are inviting Rev. and Mrs. Moon officially to Brussels for a certain date. As expected, they didn’t answer.
We then sent a registered letter to say that because they didn’t refuse, we understood it to mean that they accepted True Parents visit and as a result, said we would start to immediately organize for their visit. They then reacted very quickly in writing to say we cannot bring True Parents into Belgium. That was the crucial paper we needed and waited for in order to start the court case.
Feb.20th will be the day when the Minister of Interior gets the result
Feb. 24th will be when we will be informed of the result.
March 3rd will be final public verdict
