Providential Times & Blessed Couples Responsibilities
by Mrs. Betsy Jones
Presented in the CIS,
January 25, 1996
During this year's True God's Day celebration, Father gave specific directions to blessed couples. He asked us to, "Be proud of True Parents and love True Parents." What does this mean to you? Our task is to recognize where we stand at this Providential moment. The position of True Parents is being fulfilled during our lifetime.
Adam and Jesus were to restore and secure kingship but they did not. Jesus failed on the national level because he could not restore his family, and Adam could not on the family level. True Father now sends us out with our family. Our mission is to help people unite with True Parents. As the foundation for 3.6 Million Couple Blessing, we must begin with 160 families. This foundation qualifies us to register in one of the twelve tribes of the new Jerusalem.
Our task as Tribal Messiahs is to resemble the life course of True Parents and experience it in heart. What did the True Parents offer? They were asked to offer the relationship of love between True Parents and True Children, and the love with each other on behalf of all mankind. Satan, since the fall, usurped God's position in relationships of love between husband and wife, and parents and children. Countless times we witnessed Father working in America away from Mother and the Children. True Children most times were with other caretakers as True Parents went to the nation and to the world.
In order to purify the stained blood of mankind, God wanted man to make an offering in order to reach Him. In the Old Testament, when an offering was made they cut the sheep or lamb into two on the altar. Jesus labored hard in utter obedience to God and sacrificed himself as a substantial offering. Jesus often said, "love me more than anyone else", so all mankind could go through and be connected to the offering. True parents were asked to offer their family love for the sake of the restoration of the world.
Reverend Kwak once said the mind of a blessed couple is always divided. By that he meant although we naturally want to care for our spouses and children, yet we realize God needs us to bring His Love, Life and Lineage to the world. Therefore, we, like True Parents are called to love others beyond our family.
I can remember attending 120-day training with Reverend Sudo when he talked about "Getting into the bone marrow of the Messiah." He said blessed couples have to be willing to go to the rock bottom of hell to find God's children and bring them back. Therefore, we have to separate from each other to allow God to reclaim the husband and wife, and parents and children relationships.
He taught us the wife's position is the hinge to the Messiah's Family. At that time, I could see many elements of selfish love creep into our relationship. On the other hand. the thought of leaving my husband and two young children sometimes left me questioning was all this necessary.
I can only say that beyond True Parents example, words, and direction to our family, God was waiting to embrace and guide each of us in a most intimate way. Through these periods of offering my family and I felt God could come into my life and family in a way that continues to amaze me. Two of my children who went through the most extreme times when they were young and in a sense pioneered with us, were recently blessed this past August. My son is blessed to a Korean girl, named Yun-hee Jee, who's parents were blessed with us in 1970. Our daughter is blessed with Mr. Kamiyama's son, Masakuni. When I heard their matches I cried with gratitude and realized whatever those children went through was etched in God's heart and He blessed them abundantly.
I realized our lives as first generation start the process of separation so God's pure love can flow to our descendants. Father said, "I blessed your children to Korean and Japanese because Korea, Japan, and America must unite in a substantial way."
I realize how much True Parents are True Parents. They did everything and ask us only to make a symbolic offering to share in their inheritance. It is now these times of hardship that help me feel our family in any way resembles True Family. I can feel if we can all realize the foundation we are standing on, and just open the gates for 160 families, we will realize in some small way what our True Parents endured to make a foundation in 160 nations. Fulfilling this year's motto will be easy as we realize these things.
We all want to inspire our 2nd generation to take up this course as well. I've asked 2nd generation what helps them want to go to the Blessing themselves. Yoshiko Kamiyama told me, "seeing the love between my parents". For those couples who could take True Parent's course and drive out selfish love within their couple, their children can see an example of something they want.
In America Jin Hun Nim has been challenging the 2nd generation saying we have been living an isolated, pampered environment. He is teaching them to go the most difficult path and accept the challenges of front line work we can inherit the traditions of our parents. Many 2nd generation have taken off one year of college to witness on the front line, and realize through this they can each experience God and True Parent's heart. Pure Love Rallies have been conducted by 2nd generation in Washington, D.C. and California. A larger one is planned for Atlanta, Georgia, at the Olympics in August 1996. They are also doing a 10 million Pure Love Pledge Signature drive. Jin Hun Nim tells us, "Pure love should be the norm, the mainstream and totally natural. As pure love and true families become the norm rather than the exception, the transformation of humanity will be well under way."
Through the "Sisterhood Ceremonies," sponsored by the WFWP, many American women have had an experience in peace-making with their Japanese sisters they can never forget. Speakers like Barbara Walters, Coretta Scott King, Maureen Reagan and many others, have spoken and shared in crossing the Bridge. George Bush had tears in his eyes when he watched his wife Barbara and Mrs. Sugiyama embrace. Mrs. Bush explained their wedding day was delayed when her fiance, George Bush, a Navy pilot, was shot down in the Pacific. Mrs. Sugiyama also had relatives who fought and died in the war.
Through True Mother calling all women of the world to unite with True Father, we can see how much our True Mother has done. She has been home so little in these past few years. On one trip she told us tearfully that she is desperate to help True Father be recognized in his lifetime. Kathy Rigney, the African National Leader, shared at God's Day that mother's visit and tears in their country had moved all of them to work in such a way that spirit world was mobilized and thousands could come to the Blessing.
A few days ago, we had a conference at National Headquarters. Dr. Andrew Wilson and Reverend Joong Hyun Pak are currently writing a book entitled, True Family Values. During this conference, Dr. Wilson shared some thoughts about his book and explained more deeply the meaning of the Family Pledge. I realized as a Catholic I had said the Lord's Prayer over and over again, and the point, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us", was one of the deepest points of the Christian message.
Recently, I was reading Steve Covey's new book, 7 Habits of Highly Successful Families, and realized there is a need to identify the traits, habits, or characteristics of "Highly Successful Blessed Families".
Using the key points of each Pledge, I'd like to correlate these to the 7 habits of Highly Successful Blessed Families that we can now observe worldwide.
Pledge #1: The key point is Tribal Messiahship. Our hometown is where we were born. Andy Wilson states, "The Kingdom of Heaven will not come from the sky. It will come as Tribal Messiahs taking responsibility for their Clan and people around them. Ideally we'll bring our Clan, but by bringing neighbors' and co-workers the Kingdom will grow." Tribal Messiahs can arrange for family gatherings, reunions, dinners and workshops at their homes, service projects in the community. These families receive and connect to God and True Parents through mission activities. It's not nurture or mission. It's nurture as mission. Tribal messiahs who have maintained their spiritual connections, i.e. stayed in alignment with the directions of the local and national leaders have been the most fruitful. This is in contrast to some who became too isolated and independent and lost power to move things in their community.
Pledge #2. The key point is Sons and Daughters of Filial Piety. Andy Wilson states, "Such a family respects parents, elders; it is a vertical ethic. Plants fulfill purpose by becoming food for animals. Everything exists for the larger purpose that it is a part of. Therefore, a patriot puts aside family concern for the nation. A saint works for the sake of the world. Holy sons and daughters work for God's Will, to liberate God. Therefore, attending True Parents means making their heart your own heart. The cause of God and True Parents is my own cause."
Such families have and keep vertical traditions: Pledge, Sunday service, prayer and witnessing life, and respect for each generation - -where grandparents are bearers of tradition of the past, parents as bearers of tradition of the present, and children as bearers of tradition of the future. Our new Korean daughter-in-law won the hearts of both sets of grandparents by visiting them and doing a deep bow in respect of their position.
Pledge #3: They key point is the Textbook of True Love. Andy Wilson states, "Husband and wife have no thought of looking at someone else... Each one in the family grows naturally in the 4 Great Realms of Heart." Couples are committed to each other and see their task is to love and heal the other. As Father says, sometimes we are a parent, sister, daughter to our spouses. As Father said in his last speech in Canada to the members, "The exchange of the love organs and mutual sexual satisfaction is the main job we have as husband and wife. This is nothing to be ashamed of. As soon as there is a crack in this relationship, there will be trouble in the rest of lives."
Pledge #4: The key point is one Great Family of Heaven and Earth. Andy Wilson states," They relate to others beyond racial, religious barriers." The ethic is God is color-blind and so are we. This family goes beyond their own national background to work and love others from all races. They model and encourage their children to do the same.
Pledge #5: They key point is Subjectivity of the Spirit World. Andy Wilson states, "This family can mobilize all kinds of spiritual help and makes many good spiritual conditions." They recognize the ancestral dimension to family problems and are willing to treat even their enemies as their teachers because they know it helps pay for our ancestor's sins. So rather than return hurt for hurt, they use Father's example of unconditional love to forgive their enemies.
Pledge #6: The key point is to Multiply God's Blessings. Andy Wilson states, "Even if you never have any success in your own life, your children will be blessed. If I live to build up heavenly fortune, it will be reaped some time. " Steve Covey talks about families that have this vision are able to go beyond your past baggage and have love for others. Couples and parents and children listen to each other, spend time together building relationship and give each other happiness.
Pledge #7: The key point is the World of Shim-Jung Culture. There are no boundaries or fighting in Shim-Jung Culture. Andy Wilson states, "Everything moves in harmony. Couples do not fight in front of the children. They sow seeds of love and make positive investments in each other."
From a speech by our North American Continental Director, Reverend Joong Hyun Pak, entitled, "Dawn of the New Millennium", we read:
"The Providence has now arrived at the final chapter. Therefore, we are in a very serious time. The last predictions are in Revelations 22:12-17:
"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay everyone for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and every one who loves and practices falsehood. I, Jesus, have sent my angel to you with their testimony for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star. The spirit and the Bride say, 'Come'. And let him who hears say, 'Come'. And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life without price."
Our task is to reject false love forever and teach others the way of true love, true life and true lineage. Let us now go forward with a deeper appreciation of what True Parents have given us bringing a great harvest for Heavenly Father, True Parents, and our Tribes.
