The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Rwanda chapter, together with other partners, joined the rest of the world in marking the UN International Day of Families.

Internationally, the day was marked under the theme "Confronting Family Poverty and Social Exclusion" while in Rwanda, the theme was 'Family, A Building Block for World Peace".

In his speech, the Secretary General of UPF, Francis Makuza, said that having peaceful families is essential to sustainable peace in communities and the nation at large.

"Peace must prevail right from our families and it's from that comfort through caring and love that our efforts will be directed towards working as ambassadors of peace," Makuza said.

He also called upon the public to always consider fulfilling responsibilities and upholding personal commitment, saying its one way of maintaining great families.

Among other organizations that participated in the event that took place in Kigali was the Women Federation for World Peace -Rwanda chapter.

In her speech, the organization's president, Georgette Umubyeyi, called for equal and fair treatment between spouses if the family is to have peace.

"There cannot be peace or democracy unless women's voices are heard as well as creating the opportunity for them to take on responsibilities," Umubyeyi said..

Speaking as the guest of honor, the Egyptian Ambassador to Rwanda, Khaled Abdel Rahman, noted that peaceful actions in solving family issues and national ones are a key step towards promoting world peace.
