Last Saturday (7th June 2011) in the lovely weather, a group of 5 people from our wider London community got together to take part in a canal clean up service project. This marks the beginning of a series of regular projects which all are welcome to take part in!
The event was organized by an established and well organized charity called Thames21 which works to clean, maintain and look after London's waterways. On the day we travelled to three mills lock on a canal in East London, there we joined about 20 other volunteers and were given litter pickers, nets and hooks to try and extract as much litter as possible! As you might expect, there was a large amount of litter around: cans, bottles and plastic bags. Sometimes some more interesting objects were dragged up, we had a chair, a road sign, a shopping trolley and Hae-sul managed to pull up a truck tire!
After some work we were given a free, healthy lunch prepared by the staff. Much appreciated!
We all had fun and managed to get quite a lot out through the whole experience both internally and externally. Next time we hope more people can join in and help to build up our community by strengthening bonds together through serving in our local areas.
