IIFWP Pakistan National Seminar

by Zulfiqar A. Kazmi, Ph.D

The IIFWP Pakistan Chapter convened a one day National Seminar on March 29th at Lahore on the subject, "Universal Peace and the Global Significance of Religion." The Ambassadors for Peace Foundation, Pakistan (APFP) were co-sponsors for this important event.

Hon. Syed Afzal Haider, former Minister for Justice, a leading expert on religion and an IIFWP Ambassador for Peace was the keynote speaker. Allama Mushtaq Hussain Jaffery, Imam Qazi Tajweed-ud-Din, Allama Javed Akbar Saqi and Mr. Zia ul Haque, former Editor of the Pakistan Times and Ambassador for Peace also addressed the participants.

Approximately 150 people representing all walks of life participated. Dr. Zulfiqar A. Kazmi, President of IIFWP, Pakistan, requested that the office bearers of the Pakistan Chapter arrange this seminar because of the current Middle East situation and the IIFWP initiative for peace in that region.

Hon. Syed Afzal Haider said, "War is the worst thing known to mankind throughout his long history. It brings about the killing and destruction of human beings, the loss of their power and their defacement. It also causes the demolition of civilizations, stirs up hatred, disgust and resentments amongst the people and passes psychological problems onto future generations."

He said that the Founder of IIFWP, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, has focused on two fundamental ideals for peace: Service and Education. Knowing that world peace cannot be achieved by force, but instead requires the transformation of the human heart and mind, the IIFWP has initiated a wide range of educational programs and seminars dedicated to topics such as strengthening the family, promoting interreligious cooperation, renewal of the United Nations, international public service, and character education.

Other speakers spoke about the recent war in Iraq and stressed that war should not be prolonged. After the war, the reconstruction of Iraq should be seriously focused upon. All the participants emphasized the need for the UN to play a role after the war and to help the people of Iraq establish a long-lasting peace, tackling all the other problems created by the Saddam regime.

During this seminar all participants extended their heartfelt thanks to IIFWP Chairman, Rev. Dr. Chung Hwan Kwak for considering Pakistan as a location to establish an IIFWP Peace Embassy.
