Rev. Moon: The Way to Accomplish Our Goal

Compiled by Gary Fleisher
May 1998

The following quotes came from using the search engine on www.Tparents.org to find what Reverend Sun Myung Moon said about the right way to accomplish our goal.

In the dispensational course, He (God) cannot use the compulsory method. He or she has to come along this road with willingness, in order to bring success, as I have mentioned, we have to serve, we have to serve the person more than anything. We have to sacrifice, we have to share their tears, and their burdens. There is no other way, even if you study hard, and do research on it. We cannot use the exploitation method, taking advantage of this person. It would be wonderful if it worked, but it won't work. Let us imagine you are the teacher of an elementary school. It is not easy to educate those youngsters, who want their own way all the time. We cannot train or educate a little youngster who is willing only to go his own way. As a teacher, you have to move him, tolerate him, endure him, observe him, and try to help this young child. It's not easy. The teacher should establish the concept with even one child, who will think, "I am not losing anything from this teaching, I am gaining something, because the teacher is serving me, not exploiting, not taking advantage of me." If the child feels he loves the teacher more than brother, sister, parents, and so forth, the teacher is a really qualified one, an excellent individual. From this illustration of elementary school children, the same thing applies to the work we are going to do to educate souls -- the eternal, immortal essence, educational training we are doing.

God's love uses no coercion but always waits until a person can be moved on his own to do the right thing. God's love requires great patience: God has had a miserably long wait for man.

If in your heart you desire the freedom, liberation and unification God seeks to connect it to you, you must voluntarily pursue the course from the age of the servant to that of the children and from the age of the children to that of the family in which one serves the parents. You should know that this is determined by the principle of freedom. This is not achieved under a certain command, restriction or by coercion. Only when we overcome the question of life and death and can share a free and joyful shimjung, thinking of God and Jesus, can we make a relationship with God's ideal.

The Olympics were a good expression of seeking absolute values in a horizontal way. Athletics requires total giving. No athlete can succeed without expending his hundred percent effort. He cannot survive if he expects merely to receive praise from others. He has to earn his medals by shedding his sweat and tears. Therefore his accomplishment is respected universally, and no one can take it away from him. However, if an athlete gives a half-hearted effort, seeking a short-cut to victory, he can never win. Thus the standard of total effort is quite firm as a horizontal absolute value.

Most important of all, in God's way there is no coercion, only willing participation.

Sometimes you start to think more pragmatically, looking for easier ways to dodge difficulty. You might look at it another way, thinking that a little while later you will try to achieve the ultimate goal, but for now you will just do anything you want to do. I thought about those shortcuts a long time ago and I came to the conclusion that there is no easy way out.

There is so much deceit. Empty promises which are easy to make during campaigns. These things happen very easily. We see these things everywhere in the world. The question is, how can we digest these bad things and turn them into good?

Within your heart I have planted a small seed of God's mind. That seed must germinate and grow bigger and bigger, reaching out to your family, society, nation and your world. If you have a difficult task ahead of you, go after it. You are not asking for an easy way out, looking for a clever way.

The power of love is voluntary. It never uses coercion. Compulsory love makes no sense because love is a natural process, a willing and harmonious interaction. The multiplication of such harmonious and voluntary love will be genuine; pure descendants will come forth. New offspring will be born and a new lineage will emerge, centering upon the pure love of God. If your love is given only under certain conditions or bound by a contract, however, it has no purity. If you can love only at gunpoint or under pressure, your love is tainted. Pure descendants cannot come from such love.

What kind of method will we use to take these people with us? We cannot use the compulsory method. One way we can use is to find out if they will accept our role. Persuade them that there is no other way for them to follow, except to go along this road with us. How are we going to persuade them that we are on their side? In other words, we have to let them recognize that we are on their side, their friends, when they are under sorrow, pain, turmoil, and so forth. The person will move and come to us when we persuade them that we will share their sorrows, pains, tortures, and problems. There is no other way to let them move toward our side, than to persuade them that we are suffering for them, we have sorrow on their part, we are sharing their problems and tears, and sorrows. Have you ever thought about what other road, what other method we can use to bring the people to our side than the one method he is suggesting right now? This is the same position God, our Father, must take in order to save mankind, taking this road, taking us along this road with Him.

Do not concentrate on clever or devious ways of doing things. In the long run these are not effective. Acquire a genuine feeling of love and don't lose it. After I leave, would you continue to work with even more enthusiasm than when I am here? Then you must pay more attention to each other for the common objective and purpose. I ask you to say at least three good and positive things and do three good deeds every day, no matter how small. If you are going to thank someone, don't just do it out of habit but with a genuine motive. Perhaps that person has never heard anyone say thank you the way you will. If you keep doing this, as our work blossoms and grows, you too will be blessed, coming nearer and nearer to heaven.
