"Then There Was Silence"

(In Memory of My Sister, Toni)

It was the 23rd of August, 1994 when my dear sister passed away.

I was in shock when I found out. Afterward I had very little to say.

Because my mind began to race back to the childhood games that we once played.

To the sound of our mother calling...

Then there was silence!!!!!

I couldn't stop my mind from racing on...to the time when my sister was chosen to play on a girls' softball team called the Blue Birds.

When her time came up to bat, while Mother and I in the bleachers sat,

Sometimes the crowd would go wild after Toni made a hit,

Shouting "Run, Toni, Run." She'd get up covered with dust,

After sliding into home base, she'd look up at us and smile...

Then there was silence!!!!!

Then when America declared war, she joined the women's army...

Was honorably discharged.... Now among some of the other veterans of her country,

She lay in Calverton National Cemetery...

Then there was silence!!!!!

We buried her today, August 31st...

As I turned my back and walked away...

I will always remember her beauty and that smile upon her face....

Spiritually I could see the angels beckoning to her, as she was walking towards them to receive their welcome embrace...

I saw them wrap their arms around her and took her up in space...

I looked up and blew her a final kiss...

Then there was silence!!!!!
