Dr. Pak delivers the final talk in the three-part series and reveals the true meaning of the Fall of Man based on the Divine Principle.

Tonight, I would like to thank you for this wonderful gathering. Each night the excitement is mounting here in Moore Theater-more attendance, more applause. Truly you are making all our company, the Sun Myung Moon Christian Crusade, very happy. Tonight, I would like to deal with one of the most important subjects of all: love. There are many crises in our world, but there is also a crisis of love. But the root of the crisis of love was there at the dawn of human history. Tonight I want to talk about the origin of that crisis of love.

God created the world. According to the Bible, God created the Garden of Eden and in that garden God planted two mysterious trees carrying mysterious names. One tree was named the Tree of Life. The other was named the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God also created two persons initially, one man and one woman. That man's name was Adam and that woman's name was Eve. Then God gave them the commandment. As you read in Genesis 2:17, God said to them, "But of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die." This was the first pronouncement of death in the Bible. Adam and Eve, however, disobeyed the law. They ate the forbidden fruit. What was that forbidden fruit? Was it an apple, an orange, a banana?

A few years ago I went to Rome and had the opportunity to visit the beautiful museum in the Vatican. There was a great big painting, a masterpiece painted by the famous Michelangelo. He painted on that big wall the story of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, from the creation to the resurrection. I looked at the section on the fall of man. Michelangelo painted an apple tree. There is a woman eating one apple and giving another one to Adam. There was also the serpent who enticed Eve. Michelangelo indeed followed the instruction of the Bible.

Do you really think that a piece of apple caused the misery of mankind and literally the kingdom of hell on earth? If an apple was the problem, I am afraid Adam had very bad teeth. He didn't even chew the apple too well. He swallowed the whole apple and that is why we all have an Adam's apple today.

The problem today, however, is that the original sin of Adam and Eve caused what must be a hereditary sin. Because the Bible says in one man, Adam, all die. The result of the fall in the Garden of Eden has now passed from generation to generation and is affecting our world today. This must be a hereditary sin. How could an apple or orange cause such a hereditary sin? Impossible. Science cannot prove that. Furthermore, Jesus said in Matthew 15:11, "Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." According to the teaching of Christ, the theory of eating an apple and becoming fallen is not true.

Many Christians today believe the apple or orange was not the problem. The problem was an entirely different one-disobedience. That was the sin. God was very angry because man disobeyed Him. However, I ask you, would you test your children to find out if they are obedient to you or not by risking their lives? Would you leave a poison cookie in front of your little child and say, the day you eat of it you shall die? And then just watch? No parent would do that. But God is our Father. Our Father would never test His own children by risking their lives. If that were the case, God is indeed not a God of love. He would be a God of cruelty. So it cannot be that way.

So today, we must take a serious look at what actually happened in the Garden of Eden. And there is one more important thing to discover: the identity of Satan or the devil. Jesus Christ warned of the existence of the devil in the Bible. It is a reality that the devil exists in this world. The Bible said that devil is Satan. Who is Satan? What kind of crime has Satan committed? Furthermore, day in and day out Satan is accusing man in front of God. But man cannot prosecute Satan because we do not know the identity of Satan. Furthermore, we do not know the crime of Satan. We have not yet proven what kind of crime Satan committed.

Tonight we are going to uncover the original sin and the original entity of Satan. So I would like to invite all of you to join with me in a heavenly FBI investigation. Let's go to the Garden of Eden and discover what actually happened.

First of all, I would like to invite your attention to the Tree of Life. If we know the meaning of the Tree of Life, then we know automatically the meaning of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil whose fruit God warned Adam and Eve not to eat. The Tree of Life is mentioned in Genesis, but this is not the only place in the Bible it is mentioned. In Revelation 22:14 there is another mention of the Tree of Life: "Blessed are those who wash their robes that they may have the right to the Tree of Life and that they may enter the city by the gates." And in Revelation 22:13, God says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Therefore, the Tree of Life God mentioned in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, and the last book of the Bible, Revelation, must have meant the same thing. God is an eternal God. The truth of God is unchanging. The Bible is telling the same truth cover to cover. Therefore, wherever the Tree of Life is mentioned it must be the same.

Today Christians and theologians unanimously agree that the Tree of Life in Revelation symbolizes Jesus Christ. Why? The Bible says in Revelation 22:14, "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life." The Tree of Life is Christ. Then, the Tree of Life in Genesis must also be Jesus. However, as you know, Jesus was not incarnated in the Garden of Eden. When you read further, 1 Corinthians 15:45 says, "Thus it is written, `the first man Adam became a living being'; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit." The last Adam, Jesus, came to this world as a life-giving spirit. Jesus was not in the Garden of Eden, but Adam was. Therefore, the Tree of Life in Genesis symbolizes Adam.

But there were two mysterious trees. The Tree of Life is Adam, so the other tree, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, must have meant another person in the Garden of Eden. The only other person there was Eve. The two trees represent Adam and Eve. We discovered a very important thing; now let us continue our FBI journey.

This time let us investigate the serpent, because the serpent caused the trouble. Let us hear what the snake, the serpent, said to the woman. In Genesis 3:4-5, after tempting her to eat the fruit, the serpent says to the woman, "You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." This serpent in the Garden of Eden mentioned the name of God. He knew not only of God's existence but also that God gave a particular commandment to man. A snake in the field has no way to know the presence of God. Snakes are not spiritual beings; only a spiritual being can understand God. Therefore, the serpent must symbolize a spiritual being who has the ability to understand the presence of God. But Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden cannot he the serpent because they were the victims. There is one other creation that can understand God-angels. Angels are spiritual beings. So an angel could be the serpent. Do you say "impossible"? Let the Bible answer.

When you read 2 Peter 2:4, it says God did not spare the angels when they sinned. The Bible said the angels sinned. Furthermore, when you read Revelation 12:9 you find, "The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan." The serpent is not really a snake. The serpent was an expression of the devil, Satan, deceiver of the entire world. And the Bible says then he was thrown down to the earth and his angels were thrown down with him, showing he had committed a crime. The angel became Satan or the devil, and he was thrown down into the nether gloom along with his own angels. So according to the Bible, Satan was an angel.

What kind of crime did that angel commit? This answer is also in the Bible. Let us read this time Jude 1:6-7, "And the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling have been kept by him in eternal chains in the nether gloom until the judgment of the great day; just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire." The sinning angels committed the same crime or sin as those in the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, which was immorality and unnatural lust. Therefore, the fallen angels' sin must have been immorality and unnatural lust, which is adultery. The fallen angel became Satan. That angel committed the sin of adultery, according to the Bible.

Let us invite your attention to another area. Let us this time examine Adam and Eve. Genesis 2:25 says, "'The man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed." However, Genesis 3:7, after they ate the fruit, says, "Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons."

In Job 31:33, job says, "if I have concealed my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom." Job is saying that Adam in the Garden hid his sin with the apron. But if eating the apple was the sin, then the hand and the mouth must have been responsible, and Adam should have covered his hand and mouth. But the apron covers the lower part of the human body.

There is only one sin that can be committed by the lower part of the human body. That is adultery. The serpent enticed Eve, and there was a relationship between the woman and the fallen angel. Then that sin was repeated between Eve and Adam. This was the tragedy that caused God's heart to grieve.

You know there is only one sin that can affect generation after generation. That is adultery, because it affects the lineage. God created His children to be His own pure lineage, but that lineage was stained by Satan with the original sin. And that stain, that spot, has been there, existing all through human history from generation to generation. This is why Jesus said, "You are of your father the devil." Human history started from the devil as father, instead of God.

Let me explain briefly how all this happened. God first created the angelic world. The angels are like servants. This is why the Bible says, do you not know that they are all ministering spirits. In other words, angels were ministering spirits as servants of God. God sent angels to Abraham to inform him he would have a son at the age of 100. God sent an angel to Mary to inform her she was going to bear a child. God also sent angels to Sodom and Gomorrah to demolish those wicked cities with fire and brimstone.

God created man as the children of God. We are the children, and the angels are the servants of God. A father's servants also belong to the children. In other words, we are like a prince and princess of God. The angelic world is the servant world. They not only serve God, but were supposed to serve man. This is why 1 Corinthians 6:3 says, "Do you not know that we are to judge angels?" We are even given the power to judge angels. Before the creation of Adam and Eve, the archangel named Lucifer was the center of everything. He was like the prime minister in the sight of God.

He handled every problem and distributed the love of God to the angelic world.

But when Adam and Eve were created, Lucifer saw the difference in the love God had for Adam and Eve and that God loved them more than He loved Lucifer. The ambitious Lucifer was very jealous of the position of Adam. Then he looked at Eve, and she was a very beautiful woman. Thus, he began to harbor false ambition and arrogance and to develop selfish motivation. The Bible in Isaiah 14:13 says concerning the motivation of Lucifer, "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High." The servant wants to become the most high in heaven. He can think of only one way he can do that: win the heart of the daughter of God, Eve. If he could become united with Eve, then he could cast out Adam. He can place himself in the position of Adam so he can control the entire human world.

With his misdirected ambition and his burning desire for illicit love with Eve, the archangel approached Eve with a lie. He twisted the truth of God and successfully won her heart. They united in illicit love, unlawful love, and impossible love. That constituted the spiritual fall of man. When that happened, Eve received two elements. One was fear. Even though the archangel was moving toward the enticement of Eve, his heart was struggling. He was in fear, knowing that he was violating the law of God. That fear was transmitted to Eve, our original ancestor, so our world today is full of fear. Fear overtakes us. This fear was transmitted from the fallen archangel to Eve.

Eve also opened her eyes. Actually God planned to have Adam and Eve's eyes opened in the wisdom of God. But they prematurely united with the wisdom of Satan and became wiser in Satan's knowledge. Eve realized Lucifer was not her intended mate. Adam was. So she dashed to Adam and urged him to act as her husband-but without God's blessing. This was an unlawful union between man and woman-without God, separated from God, united under Satan. This constituted the physical fall. God created man in spirit and body. They fell in spirit and body. The corruption of man was thus completed.

Now I know you have two important questions. Let me touch upon them very quickly. How is it possible for an angel to commit adultery with a human, with Eve? We have flesh, angels do not have flesh. However, the spiritual world is capable of duplicating all the physical phenomena, plus more. For example, Jacob met an angel when he was returning from Haran to his home in Canaan, at the ford of Jabbok. God sent an angel to wrestle against Jacob, and they wrestled all night. One had a physical human body, and the other had a spiritual body. But they wrestled against each other all night. Genesis 32:25 says, "When the man [the angel] saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and Jacob's thigh was put out of joint as he wrestled with him." The angel with his spiritual body hit the thigh bone and put it out of joint. If an angel and a man can wrestle, and an angel can dislocate Jacob's hip joint, an angel and a human are capable of doing anything together, including adultery.

Another question, probably the most important one this evening: Why did God Almighty allow such a situation to occur? How in the world could Adam and Eve, created in the law of God, and an angel also created in the law of God, derail from the principle of God?

Let me make one simple illustration. Here is a track I got from a toy shop, and here is a toy train. This train has no freedom to maneuver outside the track. The track is like the will of God, divine law. The train is like the creation, man or angel. All creation was created under the divine law of God. The apple tree cannot arbitrarily become a banana tree. It is impossible. The law of God dictates that the apple must be an apple tree. So Adam and Eve, including the angelic world, all were created within the divine law of God. In this situation it is impossible to derail from the law of God.

However, many times train accidents happen. When an even stronger power hits the train's side, then the train can derail. If in this universe some power is stronger than the law of God, then a man and angel can derail. Your question must be, is there such a power in this universe stronger than the law of God? My answer is yes. One power. One supreme power in this universe. That is the power of love. God put the power of love supreme, at the highest possible level in this universe, because God wanted to create the world of love, and God is love. He wants to manifest His infinite love to this world and receive infinite love from His creation, man. In order to have this love fulfilled, love cannot have any limitation. Love cannot be limited by boundaries and cannot be confined in a small container. Love, in order to be love, must be free. Absolutely free. The most powerful force in the universe. Even in our human world that has been proven.

There is the one power that can bring you beyond the power of death. That is the power of love. In the past and today, many patriots die for love of their country. And brides and bridegrooms on their honeymoon tell each other, "I love you more than my own life." Or, "I love you unto my death." (Then problems come and this honeymoon pledge usually doesn't last more than three days.) In any case, it is a proven power that love is supreme in this universe.

Because love is supreme, once man has reached perfection, which means maturity in love, we become a mirror of the love of God and capable of receiving the infinite love of God. Once we reach that level, because love is supreme, men and God are united in love, and nothing in this universe can separate them. This is how the perfection of love can last from eternity to eternity.

Let us hear what St. Paul said about love in Romans 8:38, "For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." Love is like a magnet between God and man. Nothing in this universe can separate the perfected love relationship between God and man. Perfection remains for eternity. We are to live in infinite joy and love in fellowship with God. That was the original design.

But God knew that until man reached that perfection, man needed extra protection. God knew there was the possibility of infiltration of the illicit love of the angel. That is why God gave them the commandment: Adam and Eve, my children, watch out. I want you to be pure. Maintain your purity until I let you unite in love between me and you and you two together. Guard your love. Do not misuse it. This was the commandment, and they were expected to obey this commandment. Following that commandment would keep the train on the track until Adam and Eve were mature, perfected. Once perfection was reached, that commandment would no longer be necessary, because the super power of love would unite God and man eternally.

The problem was not so much the temptation of the angel. Or the power of love. The problem was the lack of faith of the man and woman in God. What made God's heart grieve, what made God very angry, was the faithlessness of Eve. One commandment came from God. The day you eat of it you shall die. Then Satan approached her saying, no, you will not die, that is the truth, the other is a lie. And the woman believed him. And Adam fell also.

Therefore, Adam could not become a life-giving spirit. Adam and Eve and all their descendants did not have true life. Therefore, Jesus said we must be born again. God initially created the Tree of Life. Adam was supposed to become the Tree of Life. However, because of uniting with Satan, Adam became the tree of death. Jesus Christ came 2,000 years ago as the Tree of Life. So he said, I am the author of life and you must root yourself in me.

All we have to do is change our root of satanic origin to the root of God's origin. Jesus Christ represented that root, that tree.

We are all expected to become grafted into the Tree of Life so we can share the one true richness of life from the true source of God. This was what Christianity is all about. This is the mission of Jesus Christ. This is what salvation is all about: that we no longer belong to that false tree but belong to the root of life. However, I tell you that the time has come for the Second Coming of Christ. For what purpose is he coming? So far we have been born into the dead tree and we must be adopted into the new tree of life. But this is still not the end of it. We are eventually to be born into the Tree of Life. Then we will no longer need a savior. This is the purpose.

The Second Coming of Christ is coming. This is the hope of mankind, that we all can be born no longer in the dead tree through Satan but through the son of God, so we are able to give birth to sinless children. That person is born in the kingdom of heaven, automatically transferred into the kingdom of heaven. This was the original intention of God and this is going to be fulfilled by the Second Coming of Christ. This is the hope. Hope for Seattle. Hope for America. Hope for all mankind.

In 40 minutes I can only very briefly touch upon the truth of the Divine Principle revealed through the modern-day prophet Reverend Sun Myung Moon. I want you to know more. The opportunity is coming tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. At a beautiful site, this crusade is conducting a two-day seminar. All you have to do is come tomorrow morning by 10:00. I heard so many wonderful comments and encouraging remarks every day. I thank you very much for coming in this enthusiastic fashion. Someday we will come back to Seattle. But until then we are going on to other cities: St. Paul tomorrow, next week Dallas, New Orleans, Miami, and Columbus, Ohio. We are going to cover 50 cities in 50 states. Our young people are going to attract thousands and thousands of people to God and Christ. I thank you for coming.
