A Bit Of Everything UTS

Dear Alumni,
It is great to have our students back. UTS exists for the sake of our students. And we exist for the sake of alumni. I hope that as the passages of our lives takes us into the realms of middle age and beyond, our experiences at UTS will grow richer and more meaningful.
We should realize True Father's ideal of an alumni community spanning the globe. Mr. Steve Henkin (UTS '80) is often on my case about creating an alumni talk group or bulletin board. Mea culpa. Not wanting to pass the buck, but also not wanting to prevent any energetic alum from doing this, I mention it as something that anyone in cyber space could do for everyone, as an alumni association building offering.
Now, back to this term. Final numbers are not in, but it looks like we will hit about 140 FTE between both campuses. Our numbers are holding strong as a result of the big influx of new students last year. This term we have five wonderful new students here at Barrytown, two from Korea, one from Japan via Jardim, one from Italy and one, an Anglican named Moses, from Uganda. Three are men, two are women, and all of them bring great cheer to UTS.
In December, we moved our Extension Center to the New Yorker Hotel's ninth floor. The students and faculty are happy with the change, having everything on one floor, a centrally-located student lounge, a larger, integrated library space, and just being in that great hotel with a Starbucks across the street (two, in fact). Regretfully I cannot locate my photos of the open house . But I am including a photo of Dr. Winings speaking to a group of prospective students at a church in Harlem.
You'll also find a photo of our Autumn Golf Classic, and our UTS couples caroling at our Christmas lunch.
Today we enjoyed a tremendous session on strategic planning with Tom Wade, a consultant from Hyde Park. We are in an ever-changing environment and cannot rest on past laurels. Our accrediting agency, the MSCHE, demands quality long-term thinking integrating enrollment management with strategic financial, program, facilities, technology and personnel planning. UTS has received a warning from the MSCHE that our accreditation may be in jeopardy due to our lack of data-driven planning. We will submit a major report at the end of March. We are doing a good deal of creative thinking here and having vital discussions with church leaders. Today's session, including Board Chair Farley Jones, Secretary Hugh Spurgin, Academic Committee chair Dr. Anthony Guerra and president emeritus Dr. David S. C. Kim, inspired us for the coming weeks of intensive work.
As the alumni are aware, the future of UTS looked very bleak two to three years ago. Our Founder and the True Family invested heart and substance since then and brought us through that major period of crisis. Now it is up to us to create the vision and plan to extend that lease on life into a wonderful future. The new goals and objectives are a piece of the puzzle, but there are many more. Maybe you hold a few of them!
God bless all UTS alumni, and I'm sure I'll see some of you up at the lake.
ITL, Tyler Hendricks
