2) THE UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE AT UTS
We (Dr. Wilson and Dr. Hendricks) have been working on the college project over the summer with other administrators, Trustees and consultants. We are paying our most serious attention right now on the facilities plan. Also with our consultant we've improved the draft application form to the NYSED, developed our PowerPoint presentation and refined our strategic thinking.
As you know, the College project is an idea that is being refined and filled out. It is more than an idea; it stands on the foundation of what is probably the finest survey ever conducted within our movement, which shows significant positive support among all ages for a Unificationist interfaith religious college at Barrytown. We have a fine campus, debt-free, 30-year track as an educational institution, a 15 year track chartered by the NYSED, and a recently renewed seminary accreditation. We also have favorable indications from the local community; at the end of this week we will present our draft Master Plan to an informal group representing the town, county and planning professionals.
We worked with a consultant last winter to create a preliminary business plan of 60 pages that shows a college can work financially, based upon our warm market as revealed in the survey. We have movement demographics on our side at the moment. We have a curriculum and staffing proposal nearing completion to go to the State, with three majors. We have a plan for how to restructure the corporation, and we are working on the details of the facility transformation. We also enjoy sincere support from Dr. Yang and other significant UC leaders. The Board of Trustees is working with the administration, mentoring the areas of curriculum, charter, facility development and strategic planning. Regarding financing, at this point we believe that "if we build it, they will come." As is the case with all great start-ups, our greatest assets are our vision and faith, and the tenacity to see it through.

4) A PUBLICATION BY MAARTEN MEIJER (UTS’91)
After the publication of my bilingual "Hiddink Biography - Going Dutch" (a portrayal of the Dutch coach of Korea's successful national soccer team), my Korean publisher commissioned me to write "a book about Korea." This has just been completed: English and a Korean versions of "What's So Good about Korea, Maarten?" have hit stores throughout Korea this month.
The book covers four main areas: family; education; society and international relations; lifestyle, art, and culture. It offers insights into traditional Korean culture and the rapid social transformations currently taking place. Chapters are divided into short subsections so that the sometimes complex Korean customs and trends are more easily surveyed. In addition, there are numerous short stories contributed by others (Koreans and non-Koreans, UC members and non-members) which are usually intriguing and often humorous. There are many photographs which makes the book more lively and accessible as well. I think the book will be of interest to Unification Church members and others concerned with Korea. Hopefully, it will soon be available in the U.S., at least at Unification Church bookstores. Meanwhile, I would be willing to make arrangements with my publisher for individual orders. You can find out more about the book by visiting my website http://maarten.cyworld.com It is a Korean site, but I created some English options.

5) LETTER FROM THE FIELD: BOB SPITZ (UTS'86)
After reading UTS alumni sermons from JD Doose (UTS'83) June E-Cornerstone and Mike Yakawich (UTS'87) available at www. familyfed.org
Bob Spitz writes
WOW! This is just great reading these sermons.
We can all inspire each other to do better and better.
I only wish we had a youth outreach ministry to bring the vast experience of our UTS grads to inspire and mentor our second generation and outside youth.
That would be great!
6) MENTORING
Mentoring was the way Jesus led and taught His disciples. By spending time in close relationship with them, He passed on his knowledge and character, teaching and training them to carry on the ministry after He was gone. Mentoring has been a primary model of Christian education ever since.
Through a mentoring relationship, one person empowers another by sharing their God-given skills and resources. Mentors come alongside you to share their wisdom, widen your perspective, sharpen your skills, encourage you to reach your potential and open doors to help make it happen.
Don Sardella has gathered a collection of mentoring guidelines for those who are interested in developing a mentoring program. don@leadfromwithin.com
7) MICHAEL HERBERS (UTS’78) - "THE VOICE AND THE WORD"
Sends notice of his recently completed novel about Jesus and John the Baptist which narrates not only the DP key reasons for John’s failure to "make the road straight," but begins from the time of Mary and Joseph’s betrothal and seeks to answer many of the questions about the "hidden years" in a way which can logically be derived from what history and custom tell us of those times. Geography, flora, fauna, history, etc., have been researched to make it as true as possible, but he has closely followed the Bible, citing some 400 verses, so that it can be used as a discussion and witnessing tool with Christians in understanding Jesus as a real man in real circumstances amid family and socio-cultural conflicts, as recorded in the Gospels. Several areas of DP are merged into the themes at important places.

Preface
No man in all of human history has so affected the course of civilizations as has the life, teaching, and death of Jesus of Nazareth, proclaimed as the Christ, the promised messiah. Whether in response to or in reaction from this man, men and nations have risen or fallen, but none has been indifferent.
So great has been the magnification of Jesus that the circumstances and lives of persons surrounding him have been alternately diminished, stereotyped, scorned, or simply enveloped and swept along in the aura of the Jesus story. One such historical personage is that of John the Baptist, he who was given the heaven-sent mission – responsibility -- to "make straight the way of the Lord." Only thirty-seven unduplicated New Testament verses speak of this man, who was "more than a prophet…and greatest among those born of women," to whom God gave the second-most critical mission in history. Few words have been written since.
These two men were cousins, John being the elder by six months. Both men lived in obscurity for thirty years until John dramatically stepped forth to preach repentance and preparation for the coming messiah, followed by Jesus a few months later. Recent scholarship and archeological discovery have shed some light on the cultural milieu of their era, but has not, however, been able to inquire into the fundamental questions of their relationship.
This book’s title embodies the well-known titles ascribed to these cousins: "The Voice" who is John, and the "Word" who is Jesus. These men and their heaven-sent missions are as indissolubly linked as are the linked functionality of their monikers. Therefore, it is especially important that this relationship be explored and historical clarity established.
This is a historical novel which has tried to create as true as possible a picture of life in those times, including weather, flora, fauna, and geology; custom and dress and language; history, politics, and commerce. Some Christian-inspired popular "third-world" images and "bible stories" of those times will be exploded as I explore real answers to the sources of Jesus’ education – the "hidden years" -- and the real-life situations he faced. At the same time, this book is faithful to the Bible in developing an understanding of the relationship between Jesus and John, their religious antecedents, and their missions. Accordingly, I take the unprecedented step for a novel by making copious use of footnotes so the reader can check the Bible himself, as well as to furnish bookmarks for further reading for those unfamiliar with the Jewish books of history and the prophets.

8) UTS ON THE FRONT LINE – Rev. Dr. Chung Hwan Kwak ( UTS’02 Hon. Doctorate)
Rev. Dr. Chung Hwan Kwak, International Chairman, IIFWP gave the opening plenary address for the International Leadership Convocation Sept 11, NYC.
Here is an excerpt:
<< A third core, divine principle is that all existing things have dual purposes. That is, there is the purpose related to the development of the thing itself, and there is the purpose of the wider community in relation to which any given thing exists and acts. With any given individual, there is both a purpose of the self and a purpose of the larger whole, such as the family, the community, the nation and the world. Both are necessary. Actions carried out by individuals who ignore the larger purpose are selfish acts. Likewise, actions carried out for the larger purpose, but that lack empathy and deny others their basic dignity and rights, or violate their hearts, are selfish. Individual acts that seek to serve the well-being of the larger whole, including respect and care for the heart, the rights and the sacred value of others, are unselfish, and good.>>

9) CELEBRATION OF DR. DAVID S.C. KIM'S 90th BIRTHDAY ANNOUNCED
The first President of UTS, Dr. David S. C. Kim, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday November 12, 2005, at UTS.
Dr. Kim began his tenure as the UTS founding President in 1975, and served with distinction for 19 years. In the process he was instrumental in establishing the New Ecumenical Research Association (New ERA), the Rose of Sharon Press, the Global Congress on World Religions, and the National Council on Church and Social Action. He also guided the school through its course of obtaining its Absolute Charter from the New York State Education Department (1990). Dr. Kim was also one of the five charter members of the Unification church, its first foreign missionary (to Wales) and one of its first missionaries to the United States (1959).
Dr. Kim is best remembered, however, for his effervescent spirit and loving personal guidance to the students and faculty. The 90th Birthday will provide an opportunity for all those whose lives David Kim touched to offer back their love, stories and congratulations.
10) 4th EDUCATORS CONFERENCE, OCT 7-9
The 2005 Educators Conference will be hosted at UTS beginning Friday, October 7 and ending Sunday, October 9. Pre-workshops will take place from the morning of the 7th.
Since 2002, the Educators Conferences have been a highlight of the seminary's fall term. Education leaders from around America, Canada and even Europe have gathered to share best practices, hear great presentations, network and recharge. The Center for Education steering committee has been meeting regularly over the past six months to plan this year's conference. They have a number of new ideas about which they are very excited. At a national leadership meeting of the Unification Church of America, Rev. Phillip Schanker, Vice President for Education, announced that the Educators Conference is the premeire venue for training and certifying Unificationist educators. Since then, Phillip has joined the Steering Committee and has served as a source of inspiration as well as a great listening board. To get more information and to register for the 2005 Educators Conference, go to their web site, centerforeducation.net.
