Where Does True Happiness of Man Come From?
By Rev. Zin Moon Kim
4/95
Man is "common" as well as "private." That is, man has the individual purpose for the preservation of his individual self and the whole purpose to serve the whole around himself. If these two do not have a harmonious and balanced relationship, suffering follows man. Communism excessively emphasized to achieve the purpose of the whole, while Democracy has excessively emphasized to achieve the individual purpose. Therefore, all mankind in this world is panting because of suffering.
To solve this common problem we must first answer the following questions: What is the individual? What is the whole? What relationship do they have with each other?
The whole connotes many individuals and must exist for those individuals. For example, a man as a whole connotes many individual organs and exists for the sake of those organs. If even one organ has a problem (sickness), the man must rely on medicine to restore it to its original state. The individual not only seeks to preserve itself, but also bears a certain mission for the whole and exists to serve the whole. For example, the stomach (an individual) of man preserves itself and serves (digests food) the health of man (the whole). Therefore, the relationship between the whole and the individual is not an opposed, contradictory and antagonistic one but a complementary, harmonious and reciprocal one. Due to the fall, this relationship between the individual and the whole has not been working well in this humanistic world.
Man as a connected body having reciprocal relationship is to live in the six kinds of original human relationship. If man neglects any one of these, he immediately heads for unhappiness.
1. Relationship of upward and downward.
Upward-relationship with teachers, relationship with parents, etc.
Downward-relationship with students, relationship with children, etc.
2. Relationship of right and left.
Right -relationship among brothers and sisters, relationship among peers, etc.
Left-relationship with strangers, relationship with opponents, etc.
3. Relationship of forward and backward
Forward-relationship with leaders, relationship with employers, etc.
Backward-relationship with followers, relationship with employees, etc.
Next, let's study the absolute ethical laws in the above -mentioned human relationships. For man to achieve his dual purpose, he must be under the "law of pair system" (I and my partner) centering on a given purpose. That is, centering on the "purpose", "subject" and "object" should make "the achieved result of the purpose". We call this "Four Position Foundation." To achieve the given purpose, subject and object must have harmonious, affirmative and reciprocal give -and- take action between themselves centering on this purpose. From this right four position foundation, we can find out the seven original human ethical laws which enable man to achieve happiness.
1. Law of correlative elements.
There must be subject and object.
2. Law of purpose and centrality.
There must be a certain purpose, on which the subject must be centered.
3. Law of order and locality.
Purpose is in the first position; subject in the second position; object, in the third position; and the result, in the fourth position. This is the order of positions.
4. Law of harmony.
Four positions must be in harmony centering on the only
purpose.
5. Law of individuality and relationship
Each of the four positions must have at the same time the reciprocal relationship.
6. Law of identity maintenance and development.
The individual must not only preserve itself internally but also develop itself externally.
7. Law of circular motion.
Individuals must give and take with one another.
Observation of these seven laws is also the absolute condition for the happiness of human beings. Therefore, if any one of these is neglected, it can surely be called unhappiness .
To realize well the above- mentioned original human relationships and ethical laws, we must lead life for others, true love life. If we want others to lead life for us and us not lead life for others, these relationships and ethical laws surely exist in vain. Today, all kinds of unhappy life in this fallen world comes from no realization of these original human relationships and ethical laws. Therefore, to create the ideal world, happy world, we must emphasize not only to make money, to get power and to get knowledge; but also to educate and practice these original human relationships and ethical laws through practicing the true love life, life for others. In a sense, the latter is a more important and urgent task than the former. Therefore, all businessmen, politicians and scholars should stand up to educate and practice this true love life, life for others, because only this true love life can realize the original human relationships and ethical laws in our daily lives. But it is very sorry that there is almost no such kind of life in our society.
Give and forget what you give, and again, give and forget what you give, unlimitedly and eternally. Give until you have nothing more to give. Give even your life itself. Then the universe is fully yours. Then the universe becomes your own. This is the life of true love.
