Report on leaders' meeting at UTS
David Burton
July, 1999
This is a brief report of Thursday morning at the leaders meeting at UTS. I could not be there all 3 days, but managed just one morning - I felt quite inspired by the content and am sure we will hear more details later. I'm replying to this thread because I think it is relevant to this topic.
Thursday morning we heard presentations from Tyler Hendricks and Rev. Yang. Tyler gave a brief report on the state (members and money) of our church, then Rev. Yang spoke. He gave some personal testimony and an outline of what he feels we should focus on in the coming months. He talked about setting up 3 forty day periods beginning on July 1st (that we already have heard about), but then said we should fulfil our numerical goal for the Blessing using the Pure Love Pledge, then we should focus on our church and find candidates for the matching. His desire is to fulfill the numerical goal by the end of August - he did not mention holy candy in this context, or state how to use the Pure Love Pledge - I presume details will come out over the course of the meeting. I was impressed by his heart toward America when he shared some testimony of his spiritual experience when praying in DC at the Holy ground. He also said that because of America's position as elder son Father would be unhappy if we did not lead in the Blessing campaign.
Tyler then gave a presentation about a possible model for reorganizing our church in America - his main thesis seemed to be that major spiritual advances (ie great awakenings) in America were popular movements, that is they were driven by local/popular support, not top down hierarchical organization, and that to be successful here our church should follow this pattern. The model he proposed seemed to be based on the "cell church" idea. What impressed me was not so much his model (though it seems a sound idea and I would like to see it implemented), but rather the change in leadership style of Rev Yang implied by the fact that Tyler felt enough support to offer this radical departure from a top down hierarchical structure. I felt YESSSS!! finally a ray of sunlight piercing the gloom.
