The Words of the Huish Family |
Uncle William Haines was away on Monday, so I was asked to deliver the Monday evening lecture that he normally delivers. I prepared to teach the Introduction to the Divine Principle. I utilized some standard slides that are based largely on the red and blue content of the Exposition text but I also did something I've never done before: I read the introduction of the Level 4 book, Outline of the Principle. I have read the "black book", the Exposition of the Divine Principle, several times, but never had I actually opened the Level 4 book. Assuming this book to be less in depth than the Exposition, I never had the humility to give it a go. What I discovered, only in the few pages of the introduction, were valuable insights that I had not captured from my study of the Exposition introduction. I now feel inspired to read the rest of the book, to see what else I can learn from a different expression of a familiar truth.
I wish I had spent more time preparing my lecture. Feeling unusually nervous before delivering the lecture, I knew I would be teaching to many people I already know, but at the same time I would be teaching to total strangers. Indeed, the audience of 13 consisted of two people I had never before met: Hopefully my message was relevant to their lives and didn't fly over everyone's heads. I wasn't sure how long I would be able to speak for, fearing I wouldn't be able to teach for very long at all. As it happens, I was able to rabbit on for just shy of 2 hours, about the same length of time that Uncle William usually teaches. The audience was really interactive, which made sitting at the front and lecturing quite comfortable, and after the lecture I enjoyed speaking informally with some of the audience, especially the people I didn't know.
I don't know when I will next have the opportunity to teach, although I think in my new outreach mission I should seek opportunities to lecture. Pres. Song has frequently encouraged me to lecture more, so hopefully I'll have more opportunities to be a channel for God's words.
You can watch a recording of my lecture on ustream. Feel free to leave feedback, encouragement, criticism and suggestions, anything that will help me become a better lecturer. www.ustream.tv/recorded/9551425
