Carl Swearson was born in 1951 in North Dakota to Lutheran parents and as one of 13 children. He graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture and a minor in Military Science in May 1973 and joined the Unification Church eight months after in 1974. In the following years, he was an International One World Crusade (IOWC) member and a NWT captain in the Midwest, and in 1978 he enrolled at UTS as a member of the first class of divinity students. In 1982 he was assigned as the Church State Leader in South Carolina and was Blessed in marriage to Georgianna Dunlap in the 2,075 Couples' Holy Marriage Blessing at Madison Square Garden on July 1st.
In 1983 Carl was assigned as the Unification Church State Leader in Missouri and has since then sponsored a number of state and national prayer breakfasts and Parents' Day events. In 1999 he founded the Pure Love Alliance (PLA) of Missouri. presented curriculums on sexual abstinence to teenagers and networked with churches, community groups and schools in the inner city under a grant from the Missouri Department of Health. In 2005, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Ministry from St. Michael's Institute in Saint Louis, Missouri.
In 2006 Carl accepted the position of District Pastor for District 8 in the Midwest and was re-elected in 2012. He and Georgianna have four sons and one daughter all ranging from ages 18 to 29, and support two foster children.
Question: What did you think about the inauguration ceremony?
The Inauguration Ceremony for the District Pastors on November 27th held special significance because of the foot-washing ritual. For me, it highlighted the importance of humility and service as required components of a leader's character. May I carry that reminder in my heart and mind always.
Question: What nicknames did you have growing up, and why?
While attending college at North Dakota State University, I competed in the bull-riding events across the Midwest. My nickname then was "Roughrider."
Question: If you had a million dollars, what would you do?
My dad used to say, "If one of us has money, we all have money." Guess I'd share.
Question: What story does your family always tell about you?
When I was 13 months old, my grandmother took care of me for a couple weeks. She would entertain me by turning on the radio and playing music. I would dance until my diaper fell off. My wife also talks about how I wore my cowboy boots when we were Blessed.
Question: If you could travel back in time, who would you meet and why?
If I could travel back in time, I would like to meet Jesus. He remains an important and influential part of my life.
Question: If you didn't have to sleep what would you do during the time you would normally spend sleeping?
If 1 didn't have to sleep, I could spend more time with my wife watching Korean dramas and NFL football.
Question: If you could be a superhero, which superhero would you be? How would you use those powers?
My favorite superhero is Thor. He fights evil head on.
Question: Do you have any phobias? If so, what are they?
My phobia is not doing enough for God in this life.
Question: What is an exotic dish that you've never eaten but would like to?
I would like to eat some mangosteens eventually.
