THE BERING STRAIT TUNNEL PROJECT

The Bering Strait Tunnel Project is a major new initiative by Reverend Moon. He is appealing to the world’s people to seize what he sees as an ‘historic opportunity’ to dramatically bridge the barriers between races, cultures, religions and nationalities. He is not just talking about religious or cultural differences. Throughout his life, he has had a vision of an international ground transportation network that connects the world starting from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa to Santiago in Chile, from Tokyo to London, making the world a single community. An early disciple recalls Moon as a refugee in war-torn Pusan, Korea in the spring of 1950 watching the stream of military and commercial boats streaming into the harbor and predicting that one day, a tunnel would connect the old enemy nations of Korea and Japan.
At a conference of Nobel Prize winners and other scientists in 1981, Reverend Moon proposed a East Asian highway starting from China and going down the Korean Peninsula, through an underwater tunnel to Japan's Kyushu Island and north to Hokkaido Island.
More recently, he has been speaking around the world promoting an even more ambitious project: the construction of the "World Peace King Tunnel" an 85-kilometer, $200 billion link to connect East and West, the Americas and Asia. "This bridge can help make the world a single community at last," he says.
Free trade would occur around such an international link, and the economic and cultural exchange would help foster a common community. Although weather conditions favor a freight railroad at first, Moon says he envisions the project as a ‘Peace Tunnel’ that will include passenger facilities, encourage tourism, and even ‘exchange marriages’ between peoples along the route.

As to the estimated construction costs of $200 billion for the tunnel and up to $400 billion for a rail link, Moon is supremely confident that the resources will be found. “Think of how much money the world is wasting on war,” he says, “the time has come for nations to work together and pool their resources, and, as the prophet Isaiah once taught, beat our swords into plowshares and pruning hooks.” Or to be specific tunnel digging machines and railroad tracks…The Bering Strait Tunnel is an historic opportunity to dramatically bridge the barriers between races, cultures, religions and nationalities.
